Wisdom Tooth Extraction is a surgery to extract one or more wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the permanent teeth located at the back of your mouth. Two wisdom teeth are present in the upper jaw and two in the lower one.

If there is not enough space for the wisdom tooth to grow, it may result in severe pain, infections, or other oral problems. At this stage, it should be removed. Otherwise, it may cause more problems. Wisdom Tooth Extraction is done professionally by surgeons and dentists.

Many surgeons and dentists suggest removing the wisdom tooth even if it is not causing pain because they fear that it may cause severe infections in the future.

What is the Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are also known as the third moral. These are the final permanent teeth that erupt in our mouths. They usually came out between the age of 17 and 25. Some individuals never develop these teeth, and for others, they typically develop without causing any problem.

Impacted Wisdom Tooth

 Impacted Wisdom Tooth

Many individuals develop impacted wisdom teeth which means that there is not enough space in the mouth for the teeth to grow. So, impacted wisdom teeth may come out to a limited extent or never comes out. The impacted wisdom tooth develops abnormally like:

  • They grow towards the next tooth.
  • May grow towards the back of the mouth.
  • They may grow at a right angle to other teeth, i.e., they appear to be lying down in the jaws.
  • Sometimes they grow straight like other teeth, but they stay embedded in the jawbone.

Problems caused by Wisdom Tooth

A wisdom tooth that is not developing correctly can cause many problems. Some of these problems are:

  • Pain can arise due to abnormal growth.
  • Food materials can get trapped behind the wisdom tooth, causing difficulty.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth can cause several infections and oral diseases.
  • Such wisdom teeth can damage neighboring teeth or bones.
  • A cyst might develop around the wisdom tooth filled with fluid which can cause severe pain.
  • Tooth decay can happen in a partially erupted wisdom tooth.

Solution

When the wisdom teeth are causing problems, then the dentist suggests extraction. In this process, the incision is made in the gum tissues. Your dentist will decide which type of anesthesia you require. Wisdom Tooth Extraction is widespread, and healing may take up to a week.

Risks

 Wisdom Teeth

Sometimes, complications can happen, which include:

  • Uncomfortable dry socket, or exposure of bone when the blood clot after the surgery is lost from the area of the surgical lesion.
  • Contamination in the socket that may be caused by bacteria or confined food particles
  • Injury to neighboring teeth, nerves, or jawbone.

So, if your wisdom tooth is causing problems, it is best to consult your dentist and go for a wisdom tooth extraction. If the wisdom teeth are not removed, it may cause potential problems in the future.
